Cornel West and Tavis Smiley, best-selling authors and great thinkers on the race narrative, talk about living in a promised America, a country free of racism, inequity, poverty and despair. It’s a conversation made more urgent by one Black man’s unlikely bid, then inspired election as the first Black president.

After 12 years, Tavis Smiley is turning over the mic on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and they’ve put the choice for his replacement in your hands. What’s more, our own Van Jones, co-founder of ColorOfChange, is one of the seven finalists for the prestigious spot.
Van just finished delivering a great live commentary, followed by a rave review by Joyner’s celebrity judge. We’re encouraging everyone we know to check it out and then rank his performance online. It takes only a moment; just click here:
This week they’ll cut the seven finalists to four, so your vote really counts. If he makes it through, we know Van will elevate the issues we care about–improving our schools, fighting for healthcare, creating good, green jobs and fixing our broken justice system–on one of the most listened-to shows in America.
If you want to vote for Van, it’s easy, but you have to do it before voting closes tonight. Follow this link, then click on “Listen Now” to hear the commentary and “Vote Now” to cast your ballot:
Since you all are hitting us up about Tavis and Tom Joyner. Here’s his latest word on the subject…. Whatever reason he’s leaving, I love me some Tavis…
The following is a transcript of my commentary from the Tom Joyner Morning Show from earlier today:
There is no way to put into words the love and respect that I have for Tom Joyner or the love affair that I’ve had with Tom Joyner Morning Show listeners for almost 12 years now.
I did not “quit” the Tom Joyner Morning Show effective immediately. In July I will celebrate my 12th anniversary with the show, and as I discussed with Tom, it is my intention to take on the issues of the day in my commentary twice every week with the same energy, passion and commitment until the end of June.
Activist Said to Be Hurt by “Hate” Over Obama Stance. After 12 years as a fixture on radio’s syndicated “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” activist, commentator and broadcast personality Tavis Smiley has quit the show, Joyner told listeners on Friday.
What happened to the days when we actually expected politicians we voted for to at least pay some lip service to Black issues? I’m happy to have been able to vote for a Black man in the primaries too, but in the immortal words of Janet Jackson, “what have you done for me lately?” Thank goodness Tavis had the integrity to call Obama into question for not attending the State of the Black Union forum. It seems like a natural expectation that Obama would want to tell Black America what his plans for us are, right? And maybe get a little insight from others in attendence? Don’t start hatin’ Wild Roots now….I’m just askin… read more | digg story
It can’t be about showing some black examples of success at the top. It must be about where the quality of life for blacks is compared to the quality of life for others in this country and if we look at it from that perspective, it has not changed much as we would like to say it has changed. It’s easy to throw out one or two black names that made it in sports or entertainment or even politics, but what about the median income level of black to white, what about the education level, what about the level of business, what about the level on contracts? When we get into those issues we find that we are not that different from 1968’s Kerner Commission.
I know I keep hittin’ up Tavis lately, but it’s because it seems to be the only venue on TV having the real conversation about race that Obama’s speech called for. And which, by the way, Sharpton has been dogged for in the mainstream media for how long?
Be sure to watch Tavis all this week from Memphis as we remember Dr. King’s legacy on the anniversary of his assassination.

Senator Barack Obama and the State of the Black Union 2008
Tom Joyner Morning Show
Thursday, February 14, 2008
By now many, if not most of you, have either read or heard about the letter faxed to me by Senator Barack Obama yesterday to officially inform me that he would not be attending the State of the Black Union symposium next Saturday, February 23, in New Orleans, live on C-SPAN. The letter was apparently made public on the Internet by the Obama campaign.
This morning a few thoughts now about the letter, about Senator Obama and for that matter, about Michelle Obama.
